In the afternoon, visit the Lipad mud volcano, famous for its mineral salt lick for wildlife and birds, by 20 mins trekking through the rainforest. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints here and climb the observation tower to admire the contrasting landscape of the bare mud volcano and its surrounding thick forest. Overview
Tabin Wildlife Reserve is located in the eastern part of Sabah, Malaysia, The reserve encompasses approximately 122,539 hectare of rectangular area in the centre of the Dent Peninsula, north-east of Lahad Datu town. Created in the year 1984, Tabin has been declared as a Wildlife Reserve that accommodate large number of animals, some of which are highly endangered, inhabiting its forests. Guests might be able to get a chance to spot the two largest mammals of Sabah, namely Borneo Pygmy Elephant and Tembadau, as well as 9 species of primate, 3 species of cats and 42 families of over 220 bird species, all of which are protected by the wildlife reserve.
One of the highlights of Tabin is its active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes which often attract wildlife, making it an ideal platform for wildlife observation and bird-watching. Popular recreational activities that is worth to write in your things-to-do list are jungle-trekking, night safari, night walk, wildlife-spotting, bird-watching and rainforest education.
Tabin Wildlife Reserve, which is mainly covered with lowland dipterocarp forest, has become attractions that provides deeper understanding of the rich bio-diversity of nature in Sabah and a place for guests to gain experiential learning experience about the need for wildlife conservation. The Wildlife Department of Sabah is the custodian of the animals in the reserve while the Forestry Department of Sabah is responsible for the tress in Tabin.
